<p>Several months ago, this column published an article referencing Chinese-made 3D homes. Referred to by designers as &ldquo;Yoda houses&rdquo; (because they weren&rsquo;t attractive and because they looked like the dwelling of the famed Master Jedi in the Star Wars movies), the Chinese versions were not found to be appealing to many home buyers. However, as of yesterday, an Austin, TX company, ICON, debuted a permitted 3D printed home. They can print a 600 to 800 square foot home, with a bedroom, living room, bathroom and a porch, in 24 hours for about $4K! Small, but with much more curb appeal, these homes could be the answer to affordable housing in housing markets where availability is little to non-existent. <br />

As housing needs increase, so does the need for a secure, reliable electricity supply, 24 hours a day. That ready at-all-times supply of electricity also needs to make use of renewable energy resources. The solution lies in energy storage. Researchers in Melbourne, Australia (RMIT University) have created a prototype of an alternative battery that runs on carbon and water. This first-ever rechargeable proton battery is environmentally friendly and cheap to use. Lithium used in batteries like Tesla&rsquo;s and others, is non-renewable and not found in every country. With an electrode made of carbon and charged by splitting water molecules, the proton battery uses abundant and readily available resources found all over the world. Not only are they re-chargeable, but they are tiny in comparison to the bulkier lithium-ion batteries. As battery storage needs are expected to skyrocket, it is also good to know that proton batteries produce ZERO carbon emissions. </p>

<p>Affordable and attractive housing, combined with renewable energy and proton batteries for storage, will go a long way to solving effective, environmentally-friendly, future construction needs for our growing populations around the globe. </p>
